William Henry Smith School in Brighouse has been Highly Commended in the Special Educational Needs (SEN) School of the Year Award category in the Shine a Light Awards for its commitment to developing children’s communication.
The Shine a Light Awards is open to schools, teams, young people and individuals who champion innovative work and excellent practice in supporting children and young people’s communication development.
Good communication skills are essential for learning and making friends. Communication is important and has a significant impact on a child’s development. This understanding is the premise in which Pearson in partnership with The Communication Trust, decided to launch the annual Shine a Light Awards.
William Henry Smith School has been Ofsted Social Care Outstanding for 12 consecutive years, providing outstanding progress and outcomes for young people aged 7 – 19. They work with children and young people across a broad spectrum of social, emotional and mental health challenges. They use knowledge, experience and expertise to help them become the best they can be. They also meet additional needs that relate to Specific Learning Challenges and common diagnoses amongst boys include ADHD and Autism.
William Henry Smith School operates residentially four nights a week from the school in Brighouse, although there are some extended day places. Bespoke learning pathways are offered in a specialist environment. They provide a 24 hour, integrated curriculum with specialist sensory and communication intervention, exceptional therapeutic services and family outreach.
