Can you help The Cartwheel Centre in Elland get back on track?
The Cartwheel Centre,
Elland needs your help
Since 1965 The Cartwheel Centre has promoted education, social welfare and leisure time activities for the benefit of the people of Elland. Whether it’s youth clubs and support services for our young people or luncheon clubs and reducing loneliness for our older people, we have been at the heart of Elland for 55 years!
However, last year was a difficult one. Due to a number of situations outside of our control, the centre experienced a very hard time and, if not for the dedication of our Management Committee, the centre could have faced closure.
However, things are now returning to normal but the centre needs your help and we are appealing for support from local businesses and individuals to serve on the Management Committee, or offer support in other ways.
Are you able to spare a few hours a week to help the centre upgrade and revamp to a standard in order to continue to be a great venue for everyone’s benefit in the town?
Until recently Youth Services have delivered sessions for local young people from the centre and there is usually a popular luncheon club. We would love to expand on the things we offer local people in Elland and need your help to do so.
If joining the Management Committee isn’t for you, could you support a fundraising campaign or be happy to make a donation?
Some of the skills we need to save the centre
Administration, IT, record keeping, opening and closing the building, overseeing contractors, gaining quotes.
You will need to be
- able to commit to regular meetings and work in between meetings
- reliable and work with integrity
- passionate about getting a job done well!
If you would like to join us or would like to have an informal chat about what you could offer, please contact Joe Braithwaite, Acting Chair joeb555@outlook.com

Elland Library refurbishment and closure of Coronation Street
Those of you in Elland regularly will have noticed that work has commenced on the refurbishment of the library.
The location of the building has necessitated that some of Coronation Street is closed for the duration of the works.
It will be closed from the Boxhall Road junction to the Victoria Road junction, with access strictly for residents only. There is no way through to Victoria Road from Coronation Street, this is in the interests of health and safety.
The library will be co-located with other Council services once the refurbishment is complete, in the meantime there is a temporary library at the former cash office in Southgate.
Although the refurbishment will likely take a while, it is essential work and every effort is being made to minimise impact. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Improving Access to Talking Therapies – Calderdale CCG survey open till 6th March
Talking therapies help people manage anxiety and depression through self-guided help, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and counselling. It is about providing people in Calderdale with accessible and appropriate psychological support to help improve and maintain their mental wellbeing. There are currently two providers of talking therapies in Calderdale – Insight Healthcare and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPFT).
The CCG wants to review how talking therapies are delivered in Calderdale. The engagement will look at what’s working and what opportunities there are to provide low level mental health interventions in different ways.
It wants to obtain feedback and ideas from people who have used talking therapies since June 2018 along with staff, referrers and people who feel talking therapies are not for them. This will support the CCG to shape talking therapies in the future.
We would like to know more about:
- How you manage your mental wellbeing
- What patient’s and staff’s experience are of the talking therapies
- Exploring the use of digital technology to support managing your mental wellbeing
Your feedback will be used to inform and shape a service that meets the needs of local people.
For more information and to access the survey, please click on the link below.
