ANNOUNCEMENT: The Great British Spring Clean has been postponed

Posted on Updated on

Our first priority has always been making sure everyone stays safe and so, we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s Great British Spring Clean until later in the year.

Instead, the Great British September Clean will run from the 11 – 27 September, when we will be bringing communities back together to clean up our streets, parks and beaches (we look forward to these days!).

In the meantime, if you are out and about getting some fresh air and doing a litter pick in line with our safety guidelines, show us what you’re doing on social media – we want to ensure all your efforts are recognised.

Everything we do, whether its on our own or with family, friends and neighbours makes a big difference in protecting the environment which can only look after us if we look after it.

For now, stay safe #LitterHeroes #KeepBritainTidy. 💚🚮

Calderdale Lower Valley Blog – Communications and updating you on the Coronavirus

Posted on Updated on

The Calderdale Lower Valley Blog will carry on bringing updates to you as and when they become available. We have taken all the necessary steps to keep you informed on essential updates whilst remaining safe.

The team can still be contacted by email or our other online communication pathways as usual. It may be however that the phone will not always be picked up, as some of us have chosen to work from home.

If you need to contact a specific member of the team by phone, it may be worth requesting that person to provide you with a best contact number.

Again, we will monitor the situation and continue updating you.

Best wishes, Calderdale Lower Valley Blog team

Coronavirus and Volunteering – how you can help

Posted on Updated on

” “We are living through extraordinary times” an understatement but crikey, it brings out the best in so many of us.”
Alison Haskins, Halifax Opportunities Trust CEO.

Due to overwhelming offers of help across Calderdale there is now a volunteering hub in place to support those in need during the Coronavirus situation.

The virtual hub run by Calderdale Council and VSI Alliance will try to help coordinate any offer to help and match volunteers to people and groups that need help. They can also help with advice and support for informal groups.

The hub can be contacted for:

  • Advice and support
  • Registering your interest to help/support our communities
  • Registering your request for support

Express your Interest

Volunteers provide a great service to the community and we frankly couldn’t do Staying Well without them but we urge you at this time to put your own health first if you fall into an ‘at risk’ category.

If you are worried that someone who usually attends your group is now more isolated or vulnerable because you’ve had to suspend activities, Staying Well can offer practical help. Please get in touch with one of our workers on 01422 392767

However, we ask for your support in helping to minimise the risk of COVID – 19 transmission.

If you have an emergency please dial 999, for all other enquiries and to report a crime please dial 101.
If you still need to enter the building, please consider the following:

If you have:

Visited any of the Group 1 countries/areas within the last 14 days

Any of the following symptoms:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath

Self-isolate and contact NHS 111 for advice.

For more information go to www.gov.uk or NHS website and search Coronavirus

We would like to reassure you that this is a measure to reduce the risk of transmission; early data suggests that those who develop an illness, the great majority, will have mild-to moderate, but self-limiting illness – similar to seasonal flu. These measures are in place to reduce the risk of transmission and further spread of the virus.

Can you help The Cartwheel Centre in Elland get back on track?

Posted on

The Cartwheel Centre,

Elland needs your help

Since 1965 The Cartwheel Centre has promoted education, social welfare and leisure time activities for the benefit of the people of Elland. Whether it’s youth clubs and support services for our young people or luncheon clubs and reducing loneliness for our older people, we have been at the heart of Elland for 55 years!

However, last year was a difficult one. Due to a number of situations outside of our control, the centre experienced a very hard time and, if not for the dedication of our Management Committee, the centre could have faced closure.

However, things are now returning to normal but the centre needs your help and we are appealing for support from local businesses and individuals to serve on the Management Committee, or offer support in other ways.

Are you able to spare a few hours a week to help the centre upgrade and revamp to a standard in order to continue to be a great venue for everyone’s benefit in the town?

Until recently Youth Services have delivered sessions for local young people from the centre and there is usually a popular luncheon club. We would love to expand on the things we offer local people in Elland and need your help to do so.

If joining the Management Committee isn’t for you, could you support a fundraising campaign or be happy to make a donation?

Some of the skills we need to save the centre

Administration, IT, record keeping, opening and closing the building, overseeing contractors, gaining quotes.

You will need to be

  • able to commit to regular meetings and work in between meetings
  • reliable and work with integrity
  • passionate about getting a job done well!

If you would like to join us or would like to have an informal chat about what you could offer, please contact Joe Braithwaite, Acting Chair joeb555@outlook.com

Elland Library refurbishment and closure of Coronation Street

Posted on Updated on

Those of you in Elland regularly will have noticed that work has commenced on the refurbishment of the library.

The location of the building has necessitated that some of Coronation Street is closed for the duration of the works.

It will be closed from the Boxhall Road junction to the Victoria Road junction, with access strictly for residents only. There is no way through to Victoria Road from Coronation Street, this is in the interests of health and safety.

The library will be co-located with other Council services once the refurbishment is complete, in the meantime there is a temporary library at the former cash office in Southgate.

Although the refurbishment will likely take a while, it is essential work and every effort is being made to minimise impact. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.
