Support the Cromwell Bottom Wildlife Group

Posted on Updated on

Cromwell Bottom Wildlife Group has ambitious plans and could use a little tractor to help them. They are working hard to make this local nature reserve a real haven for wildlife and a place for education and peaceful enjoyment for the whole local community.

As plans get bigger so do the tasks to undertake – and the tools and equipment just get heavier!

Unfortunately, they are the first to admit that they are not all youngsters so a lift with the bigger loads is definitely appreciated. The age range of our volunteers spans seven decades which forms a great blend of knowledge and experience with energy and enthusiasm and a wide range of skills. However, those with most time to give during the week tend to be people in their 60’s upwards, who are joined at the weekends by families, students and anyone else we can pull in!

They could make very good use of a small tractor to haul trailer loads rather than having to carry all our gear. There are several miles of tracks and paths around the 74 acres of the reserve – and as you can imagine in Yorkshire it’s not all flat, so just getting to a work site with all the necessary tackle is quite an effort sometimes. They could use the tractor with a trailer (already donated) for lots of jobs:

  • to get strimmers to the meadows
  • take a heavy pump and a generator to our dams and ponds
  • carry tools for path maintenance
  • cart bundles of trees for planting
  • carry all the equipment for our annual autumn cut in our huge reedbed – one of the most exhausting tasks of the year.

The group can cover the tractor’s running costs, insurance and necessary training from group funds and there is safe storage on site.

Please vote for the group – and give wildlife at Cromwell Bottom a helping hand – and you are always welcome to visit if you can!

To vote for them, visit the Aviva Community Fund website at https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/4-659.

Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band Marks The 100th Anniversary Of The End Of World War One, With A New Release “Last Post Home”.

Entitled “Last Post Home” the track has been specially written by Della Holliday and Adrian Williams in memory of those who served, or fell, in  the Great War of 1914-18.

Members of the Honley Male Voice Choir were enlisted to sing the track. The brief given to their Musical Director, Steven Roberts, was to record a vocal performance which captured a hint of the common man marching to war.

Last Post Home, has a haunting melody with evocative lyrics about a soldier’s last letter home. Dramatic, progressive harmonies and ethereal countermelodies help capture and reflect the emotion of life, and death, in the trenches of World War One. Read more…
