Calls for Calderdale Cafes to Join the Chatter and Natter Scheme

Posted on Updated on

After the appearance of Alexandra Hoskyn, the founder of the Chatter and Natter scheme, on BBC Breakfast, there have been calls for cafes in Calderdale to join the scheme.

Alex speaks about what gave her the idea;

‘The scheme was created on a wet and windy day when I was in a supermarket café with my four month old son. He wasn’t great company and I was feeling fed up. I looked round the café and saw an elderly lady who looked just as down and a young guy with severe additional needs and his support. I started to think about the positive impact we could have on each other if we could all have a chat.

When you are feeling lonely, a short five minute interaction with another human can brighten your day. It was right there and then that the ‘Chatter & Natter’ table began… (in my head and dreams to start!) but now a reality.

A Chatter & Natter table creates a space for people to talk; whether its for literally five minutes while you drink a brew, or an hour of good conversation. We’re not trying to build friendships – just simple interactions to combat loneliness and to just maybe have a big impact on someone’s day.’

Currently many of the cafes with a Chatter and Natter table are in the Greater Manchester area but the idea is spreading.

To join the scheme you can either call on 07917 586160 or email alexandrahoskyn@gmail.com

‘Brought to your Knees’ – Staying Healthy and Well

Posted on Updated on

The Staying Well Team held another successful event at Pellon Social Club on Monday 9 October. Attended by over 60 local residents,  there were  talks by Sue Watson from High Five on keeping fit and well, Men’s United and The Phoenix Shed also attended to talk about the benefits of their groups, and how they can make a difference to  help men who feel lonely and isolated.  Other agencies who attended were Victim Support, Better Living Team, Better Lives and Calderdale DART, who were also on hand to offer advice and information regarding their services.  The highlight of the day finished with the very popular singer Sally Glennon, who managed to entice the attendees to show off their dancing skills!

The Staying Well project works one to one, with people who are isolated or lonely to link them to social activities in their area. These local events have been successful in reaching even more lonely and isolated people, and following the success of ‘Head over Heels’, ‘Look over your Shoulder’ and ‘Brought to your Knees’ events, Staying Well is now moving throughout the Warley district with the view to working alongside existing community groups/churches and also planning another community ‘Dip your Toe in the Water’ event in the New Year, with the theme of staying positive and motivated.

Staying Well is about helping you to stay healthy and improve wellbeing. Referrals are for anyone 18+ and can include a chat with a Staying Well worker, a home visit and information and support to attend activities in your area.

If you know someone who could benefit from our service, please contact the Rachel Swaby Staying Well Worker on 01422 392708 or email rachel.swaby@calderdale.gov.uk
