Elland Silver Bands new “Adult Brass” class has started with a terrific Blast!
The band held its launch event last Saturday, which had over 20 participants, along with guest the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Calderdale, Councillor Feman Ali and Mrs Shaheen Ali. Councillor Marilyn Greenwood was also present.
The class has been formed initially as a 6 week pilot to test out if there is any interest within the community.
At the launch event, participants were invited to introduce themselves and to explain why they had come along. Brief demonstrations on the sound and pitch of instruments were given by members of the senior and youth band, before everyone was given the opportunity to have a go.
Participants then selected their instrument of choice and were given a few simple tasks to work on.
The aims of the class are really to introduce brass instrumentation and music making to a new audience, and to offer tailored tuition to a different age profile.
Enthused Programme leader, Sam Harrison said:
“I couldn’t believe how many people came along to the launch event, the response has been fantastic, and we have had further enquiries this week. Everyone seems really keen and interested in having a go and learning a new skill. I can’t wait for this week’s class, so we can start working on learning 5 notes,”
The class will be run for a further five sessions ending in an informal performance to family and friends before the course is evaluated to determine the next steps and future of the programme.
However, if the launch event is anything to go by, this could be the start of the Elland Bands fifth ensemble!
St. Matthew’s, Lightcliffe will once again play host to a feast of top class music when Royal Northern College of Music graduates, Juliet Montgomery and Aiden Edwards, return to sing some of the best-loved numbers from our favourite musicals.

They will be supported by The Northowram Singers, and accompanied by a superb musical ensemble, led by musical director Rob Paxman.

A new Community Networking Group has been set up on Facebook for Brighouse & Rastrick, so people can share ideas, funding information, and learn more about what other groups are doing.
So far the group has 96 members and continues to grow at a steady rate which will hopefully lead to more collaboration and sharing of good practice.
