Look how far we’ve come! Celebrating Staying Well in Elland

Posted on

20160720_192855On Wednesday 20 July the Elland Staying Well Hub held an event to celebrate the achievements of the project in Elland, Stainland and Greetland so far.

Local community groups and organisations were invited along to Elland Cricket Athletic & Bowling Club to showcase their work in these areas. Those attending included Elland & District Partnership, Chit Chat Group, Bethesda Church, Cartwheel, Yorkshire Community Connections, Let’s Just Do It, CREW and Bluebird Care.

The Adult Brass class who received funding from the project, kicked off proceedings by playing three pieces for the attendees conducted by Sam Harrison.

20160720_193728Elland Staying Well Worker, Rachel Swaby then highlighted the work in the community over the last 18 months and how, through anecdotal evidence and statistical analysis, the Staying Well project has achieved the goals set out at its inception, which were to reduce loneliness and isolation in older people and create more connected communities.

Comments overheard during the night were unanimous in agreeing that “it’s been good for Elland…It’s just what Elland needed.”

Win Theaker of the Chit Chat Group said

The funding we got means we can stop panicking about money and plan ahead properly…expand the work we do, get bigger and better next year!”

whilst another community group member added

“I know most of us knew each other’s groups before, but it’s like we are more together now and we’ve also made new contacts and come out of our shells.”

A film titled ‘Real Stories’ was shown and gave a particularly touching recount of how the Staying Well project has helped 3 local residents when they needed it most, and was followed by an impromptu ‘Thank you’ speech to Rachel from a 96 year old member of the audience, who is also a member of several of the community groups that were present.

Launch of Calderdale Wellbeing Heroes Awards

Posted on Updated on

Thursday 19 May marks the launch of a search for local Wellbeing Heroes, who are to be honoured at the Calderdale Wellbeing Heroes Awards ceremony on 10 October 2016. The ceremony is to be hosted by Insight Healthcare, in celebration of World Mental Health Day.

Is there someone in your life who helped you in your time of need? Someone who encourages you to do the things that are good for you, reminds you that you are not alone, or listens to you when you need them to? Wellbeing Heroes Awards wants your nomination!

You can nominate someone who has helped you in any way, no matter how big or small. It could be a family member, friend, colleague, or a professional who has made a difference to your wellbeing. Winners will receive an award and prizes during the ceremony in October. The deadline for nominations is Friday 29 July 2016.

The Calderdale Wellbeing Heroes Awards will take place to mark World Mental Health Day, which is celebrated on 10 October each year. Nomination forms can be collected from Insight Healthcare’s Calderdale service or downloaded here. More information about the event will be released nearer the time.

Everyone goes through difficult times and sometimes our problems affect our day-to-day lives and we feel that we can’t cope. Each year, nearly a quarter of us have difficulties with common psychological problems such as anxiety, low mood, low self-esteem, stress, trauma, phobias, and anger, as well as problems with regards to relationships, work, or debt. If you are in this situation, you are not alone.

Insight Healthcare provides free and confidential NHS talking therapy services across the country. These therapies can help you understand what is happening to you, help you work through your difficult feelings, and develop strategies for coping better. Calderdale’s service is available to anyone who is aged 18 or over and registered with a Calderdale GP.
