Children’s Mental Health Week
Place2Be is encouraging children, young people and adults to look after their bodies and their minds – and you can join in!
It doesn’t have to be difficult. Our bodies and minds are connected, so simple things that we do to improve our physical wellbeing can help our mental wellbeing too.
When we think about healthy living, we tend to focus on looking after our bodies – our physical wellbeing – through food, being active and getting enough sleep.
However, in order to be healthy overall, it’s important that we look after our minds – our mental wellbeing – too.
Our bodies and minds are actually very closely linked, so things that we do to improve our physical wellbeing can help our mental wellbeing as well. When we take steps to be Healthy: Inside and Out, it helps us to feel better in ourselves, focus on what we want to do and deal with difficult times.
We know from our work in schools that children in every class have diagnosable mental health conditions and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement. Whether you’re someone who works with children, a parent or carer, passionate about spreading the word, or keen to raise vital funds for Place2Be you can get involved and help us reach as many people as possible.
Place2Be is a children’s mental health charity providing school-based support and in-depth training programmes to improve the emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and school staff.
They currently provide mental health support in 294 primary and secondary schools across England, Scotland and Wales, reaching 142,000 children and young people.
Last year, 232 schools took part in an in-depth ‘Mental Health Champions’ programmes, equipping school leaders, teachers and staff with the skills and confidence to support pupils’ mental health.
1,044 child counsellors took part in training – from introductory sessions to our Masters programme, building an ever-growing body of professionals who specialise in working with children and young people.
This year the week was launched by the Royal Patron the Duchess of Cambridge who spoke to pupils, parents and teachers about ‘Being Ourselves’
Place2Be launched the first ever Children’s Mental Health Week in 2015 to support children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. Now in its fourth year, they hope to encourage more people than ever to get involved and spread the word.
Children’s Mental Health Week 2018 – #BeingOurselves
Some children and young people can find it difficult to think positively about themselves. Low self-esteem affects more than 8 in 10 of the pupils who have Place2Be one-to-one support.
That’s why this Children’s Mental Health Week (5-11 February 2018) Place2Be is highlighting the importance of ‘Being Ourselves’. Place2Be is inviting everyone – children, young people and adults – to come together and celebrate the unique qualities and strengths in themselves and others.
When we have a positive view of ourselves, it can help us to cope with life’s challenges and make better connections with others.
At the same time, celebrating the unique strengths of the people around us can enable us to come together in our schools, workplaces and communities.
Whether you’re a parent, someone who works with children, or even just someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people’s mental health – you can support the campaign by getting involved and spreading the word.
Let’s celebrate ‘Being Ourselves’ together.
