Join ACDAF and discuss inclusive Commuting and Green Spaces access

Posted on

The Accessible Calderdale Disability Access Forum (ACDAF) is a user led group of people with pan disabilities and who live in Calderdale. It is a very diverse group with ages ranging from 20-92 years!

We represent learning disabilities, sensory impairment, physical disabilities and neurodiverse conditions. We listen to our members lived experiences and everyday challenges and bring partners and stakeholders together with our members to look at how access and inclusion can be improved.

We are very keen to work in co production and we work in collaboration with with the local authority, West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), Canal and River Trust, Northern Rail and design teams/architects.

We meet online and occasionally face to face at an accessible venue in Halifax.

We have focus groups on Transport, countryside and green spaces, tourism and health and wellbeing.

Members can be as involved as they choose but everyone has an equal voice to raise awareness of issues affecting their lives in regards to access and inclusion.

If you would like a membership form or to find out more about our friendly group please contact Lorri 07596 707795 lorraine@visitsunlimited.org.uk

Our Calderdale: Living under the Shadow of Covid April 11

Posted on

Join us for a free, on-line event about Disability and Health issues in Calderdale on April 11th from 2.00 – 4.30pm.  It will be our opportunity to present our findings from our community research from a grass-roots perspective.

Over the last year we have listened to Hardly Heard voices from different communities across Calderdale about their experiences of living under the Shadow of Covid on themes of Disability and Health.  It will also be your opportunity to ask questions about our research as well as of the community researchers from diverse communities who belong to our research team and represent grass-roots organisations in Calderdale.

Please register via https://crag-disability-research.eventbrite.co.uk

We are also keen to continue this dialogue and discussion after the event.  We recognise that our efforts have been relatively invisible so far and hope that we can collaborate with a broader coalition of people to pursue any actions which may come in its wake.   One possibility is to explore the potential of setting up an independent Citizens Forum to enable concerns about Disability and Health to be expressed and responded to more effectively across Calderdale and with a democratic basis based upon the principle of genuine co-production.

We welcome your ideas and suggestions both at the event and afterwards on how best to go about this.  We are also keen to pursue efforts for an inclusive and supportive Calderdale in line with our support from the Connection Coalition at the Jo Cox Foundation and the Community Organisers movement in the UK.

I will endeavour to respond to all of your queries and suggestions but please bear with me if I do not always respond immediately because I am presently immersed in other conversations about the War in Ukraine and our practical response to it in the Calder Valley, UK and indeed across Europe.

VAC Training – Welcoming people with disabilities into your organisation

Posted on Updated on

This session is aimed at organisations wanting to improve their accessibility for individuals with a disability and will look at how your organisation welcomes and works with disabled people and will use the social model of disability to explore how even small adjustments can make a huge difference.

Wednesday 27 January – 10am to 1pm
At Voluntary Action Calderdale, Hall St, Halifax, HX1 5AY

The session will be interactive and will include some information about ‘a day in the life’ of a Can Do volunteer and by the end of it participants will have:

  • Considered how they might adapt their own organisations to be more welcoming for disabled people.
  • Started to develop a plan to ensure disabled people are really welcome in their organisation.
