Join the Best Paw Forward Fitness Challenge this March and Raise Funds for animals in need!

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch are inviting the local community to join their annual fitness challenge ‘Best Paw Forward’ this March. The challenge is suitable for people of all ages and capabilities with participants selecting their own distance, method and pace.

The challenge can be completed by walking, running, cycling or any form of exercise preferred. Sponsorship is encouraged along the way to help raise funds and awareness for the animals in the care of the Wade Street RSPCA Animal Centre. The challenge allows participants to pick their own distance to cover during the month of March (10, 20 or 30 miles) and anyone who raises over £20 in sponsorship will receive a medal of completion with extra goodies for dog owners who take part too!

Community Fundraiser, Michelle King says “The Best Paw Forward Challenge allows everyone taking part to choose their own level of activity which makes it perfect for people of all abilities! Whether you’re a marathon pro or just enjoy a casual stroll with the dog, you can personalise your challenge to suit your own goals. We hope that our local community will embrace The Best Paw Forward, smash their fitness goals and help us raise vital funds for the animals in our care’’

All sponsorship raised will go to supporting the rehabilitation and rehoming work of the local RSPCA Branch, covering urgent vet care, food, shelter, toys and training.

Registering for the event is only £3 and anyone wanting to take on the challenge can sign up instantly via the charity’s website: https://www.rspcahalifaxhuddersfieldbradford.org.uk/best-paw-forward-2/.

Fay Gibbons, Digital Fundraiser says “We’re starting the year with one of our favourite virtual events – our Picture Perfect Pet Photo Competition! It’s a really fun way of showing off how much our animal companions mean to us and who knows, you might even bag a Pets At Home gift voucher and a rosette in the post! The rules are simple, send us your cutest pet picture and all-around good photo – this means we’re looking for clear shots, nice backgrounds and adorable faces! Every entry will help to raise vital funds for the many cats, dogs and small animals who’re looking for forever homes here at the Centre, so get snapping and head to our website or Facebook to find out how to enter!”

The competition is open to every kind of pet, whether that’s a dog, cat, rabbit, reptile, horse or bird. Simply submit your photo by Tuesday January 18th at midday and you could be in with the chance of winning 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in either of the 3 Pet Categories. Winners will be announced on January 20th.

Local Walkers Go The Extra Mile For Mental Health

Posted on

Calderdale mental health charity is lucky to have three local people ready to step up to the challenge and walk 26.2 miles in the first ever 100, 000 person Marathon: this year’s official Virgin Money Virtual London Marathon.

On Sunday 3rd October, Anneliese, Jim and Louise will take on the world’s greatest marathon ‘virtually’ and walk Healthy Minds’ own marathon route through Calderdale.

The gutsy walkers will be completing the official Virgin Money Virtual London Marathon in Calderdale to raise funds for the local mental health charity, Healthy Minds, who provide vital support for people across Calderdale.

Team Healthy Minds are just three of the 50,000 participants taking part in the virtual event. Another 50,000 will run the traditional Virgin Money London Marathon from Blackheath to The Mall.

Instead of heading to London, our local team will be walking from Todmorden to Halifax, passing through the local communities that Healthy Minds work with and provide for.

Poor mental health has and continues to be a huge challenge for many across England, with economically disadvantaged and younger people suffering more throughout the pandemic. The three local people taking on the Marathon challenge hope to shine a light on the local needs for mental health services.

Walk with Lorraine for Yorkshire Air Ambulance on September 4th!

Posted on Updated on

Loraine Greenwood was hit by a bus in Halifax town centre on January 2020. She was airlifted to Leeds with the help of Yorkshire Air Ambulance, where she received life saving treatment.

To thank Yorkshire Air Ambulance, who had landed into the Piece Hall in order to airlift her, Lorraine is organising a fundraising walk in their aid for her 80th birthday.

This walk is open to the public and you are invited to take part!

Set to go on Saturday the 4th of September, this 8 mile walk will begin from St Matthew’s Church in Northowram.

Event organisers are hoping to sell 100 tickets to members of the public.

Tickets for the walk cost £10 for adults, £5 for under 16s and £5 per dog. Included in the tickets are pie and peas at the church afterwards. The pie and pea meal can be pre-ordered for those not taking part on the walk for £5.

Closing date for the walk and pie and peas is 28th August 2021 and no further entries will be permitted on the day.

There will also be an opportunity to meet Yorkshire Air Ambulance fundraisers at the walk to ask questions about the charity and learn all about their lifesaving work in the Halifax area.

It costs £12,000 a day to keep both of Yorkshire’s air ambulances maintained and in the air and the money raised will help greatly towards the vital funding of our service.”

Speaking of the incident, Loraine said: “I could have lost my leg or my life. I cannot thank the emergency services, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the doctors and nurses at the hospital enough for everything they have done for me. I’m so grateful that I have a life and I’ll do the best I can with it.”

Event organiser Linda McCormick, said: “Yorkshire Air Ambulance is such an important local charity, and they need all the support they can get to keep them flying across the region and saving lives. We’re looking forward to celebrating Loraine’s 80th birthday and raising vital funds for such a worthwhile cause.”
