Grants to deliver Healthy Holiday Activities for schoolchildren by June 29th

Calderdale community organisations, schools and childcare providers are invited to apply for a share of the £926,000 Healthy Holidays grant to offer fun and creative activity programmes over the summer holidays, in partnership with Calderdale Council.

Deadline for applications 29th June. 

Activities should take place during the period Mon 9th August to Fri 3rd September 2021

Grant Round Open To Support West Yorkshire Communities

West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has opened his latest grant round of the Safer Communities Fund (SCF) with £140,000 available, made up from Proceeds of Crime monies successfully secured by police and prosecutors.

Voluntary, community groups, charities and partners can now bid for grants of up to £6000 from the fund which has a strong theme of supporting communities, and a particular focus on safeguarding vulnerable people.

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), said: “In these truly unprecedented times we want to do all we can to help those most in need.

“I would welcome a broad range of project applications across all of the priority areas set out in my Police and Crime Plan. However, I am particularly looking for initiatives that support the more vulnerable such as younger people or the elderly, women and girls, those with disabilities or victims harmed by crime. Early intervention and prevention projects and those offering therapy or support are also very welcome.

“Crucially, projects must be in a position to get to work helping people right away. That means being able to operate within the current climate of Covid restrictions and in a Covid secure way.

“I really need everyone’s help in promoting this fund so that it can reach the areas where it will make the most difference, so please, if you know of a group this could help, let them know.

“I’m very pleased to be able to continue to offer this much needed funding and support during such unique and challenging times, which is also a great testament to the ongoing work of West Yorkshire Police and prosecutors in securing Proceeds of Crime resources.

“It was a key commitment of mine on being elected PCC in 2012 to ensure Proceeds of Crime monies found its way back into our communities affected by such criminal activity in first place, and it has never been more needed than at the moment during the pandemic.”

This latest grant opportunity is the 20th round of the Safer Communities Fund which has also just allocated grant round 19’s cash, of over £180,000 to 36 projects across West Yorkshire.

Projects funded include:

  • Disability Partnership Calderdale, in partnership with West Yorkshire Police, with a project to educate and empower people to report BAME Disability Hate Crime.
  • Radio Sangam in Kirklees who are implementing online Domestic Abuse Support for the South Asian community asking for help following incidences of domestic abuse.
  • Guiding Light Leads in partnership with West Yorkshire Police, who will be delivering an Educate and Empower Black Youth Programme.
  • Tigers Trust in Wakefield for their project ‘Tigers Try Time’ which will look to support and education about hate crime made against their women and disabled teams.
  • Supporting the Keighley Pride event 2021 including security and providing BSL interpreters to ensure LGBTQ people will experience improved safety.

The fund initially launched in 2014 and has now allocated £3.6m to around 790 projects making a real difference across West Yorkshire.

A virtual celebration event, looking back at fund achievements and awards for grand round 20 will be held on Monday 22nd March. All current and past recipients will be invited.

The Safer Communities Fund is financed through money and assets recovered from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act by West Yorkshire Police and Prosecutors.

West Yorkshire Police Chief Constable, John Robins, said: “These last few months have presented great challenges, not least for the many community and voluntary groups across West Yorkshire which, despite restrictions, have continued to provide vital help to those people who need it most. Whether it be supporting victims of crime, or making sure children’s or older people’s wellbeing is cared for during lockdown, we have seen volunteers step up their efforts and go the extra mile to meet growing demand on their services.

“Community groups and charities provide a lifeline to many people. They are applauded for their contribution to our society.

“Yet, the opportunities to raise funds and maintain their income has been reduced by lockdown restrictions, which is why I welcome the latest round of grant aid from the Safer Communities Fund and encourage groups to apply for well-deserved grant aid.”

The Safer Communities Fund closes for applications at 12 noon (mid-day) on Friday 12 February 2021.

Calderdale Suicide Prevention and Self-harm Small Grants

Small Grants Project Proposal

Calderdale Suicide Prevention Group formed in 2016 and produced a multi-agency suicide prevention plan 2017-20, following the publication of the government’s strategy, Preventing Suicide in England 2012 – A cross government outcomes strategy to save lives.

Our vision

“For Calderdale to be a place where suicides are eliminated and where people do not consider suicide as a solution to the difficulties they face; also a place that supports people at a time of personal crisis and community resilience for improved lives”

We are looking to work with voluntary and community organisations to implement innovative approaches to help us to meet our vision for Calderdale.  We are looking for projects which deliver activity against any of the following two priority areas.

  • To reduce the incidence of suicide and self-harm in young and middle-aged men
  • To reduce the incidence of suicide in people at risk of self-harm.

Organisations can access further information on Suicide in Calderdale including risk factors (adverse life events) and useful resources to support the development of a project and application in the further information sheet at the end of this article.

The desired objectives of the projects are:

  • To reduce the stigma of self-harm and suicide.
  • Build resilience to Mental Health problems in local communities.
  • Promoting Positive mental Health in local communities.
  • To increase the community-based support for those at risk of suicide, including in high risk groups.
  • To reduce the incidence of self-harm and repeated self-harm.
  • To reduce the impact of self-harm and suicide.

Proposals must demonstrate how they will support the Suicide Prevention Action Plan to meet at least one of the themes highlighted below:

 Theme 1 – Reduce the risk of suicide in high risk groups.

 Theme 2 – Tailor approaches to improve mental health in specific groups.

 Theme 3 – Reduce access to the means of suicide.

 Theme 4 – Provide better information and support to those bereaved or affected by suicide.

Theme 5 – Support the media in delivering sensitive approaches to suicide and suicidal behaviour.

Theme 6 – Support research, data collection, and monitoring.

Theme 7 – Self-harm

We have a total of £28,500 available for innovative projects to support suicide prevention and self-harm reduction in Calderdale.

Organisations must complete the attached application form and recorded proposal video maximum of 90 seconds in order to be considered for a funding allocation from the Small Grants Panel.

Proposals are to be submitted by noon Monday 04th January 2021 on the template below and will be assessed by a Small Grants Panel which includes people with lived experience. A scoring system will be applied, and applicants will receive feedback no later than two weeks following this date and where successful projects will commence as soon as possible.

Applications for a maximum of £8,000 will be considered.

Funding awards are subject to the organisation signing and returning the Terms and Conditions which will be issued on approval of the funding.

Calderdale Community Grants Schemes

The Council runs two grants schemes for community organisations based in Calderdale.

Community Small Grants Scheme

The Community Small Grants scheme gives out one-off grants of up to £3,000 for voluntary and community sector projects that help achieve the Council’s ambition of making Calderdale a clean, safe, attractive and thriving area for people to live in, work in or visit.

Community Festivals and Events

The Community Festivals and Events Fund supports groups that are organising cultural events and festivals across Calderdale, with the aim to get more local people involved in the arts, and attract visitors to our towns and villages. A maximum award of £5,000 will be made to any individual Festival or Event.

There is also a specific pot of money within this fund for organisations that are proposing Festivals and Events following the Boxing Day floods. The aim is to celebrate all that’s great about Calderdale, sending out a clear message that it’s open for business. It is part of the Council’s continued work to help residents and businesses get back on their feet by boosting tourism, trade and morale

To be eligible to apply for any of these grants your organisation must:

  • Be a voluntary, community or faith group
  • Be properly constituted
  • Have a bank account in the name of the organisation
  • Be open and accessible to the community you serve
  • Have a planned approach to safeguarding issues, if you are working with children, young people and vulnerable adults

The closing date for complete applications for both funds is Wednesday 1 February 2017. The Small Grants Panel will meet to consider eligible applications on Thursday 16 February 2017.
