Dr Jill Liddington is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds. Her expertise lies with women’s history, especially gender and class in nineteenth and twentieth century Britain.
Jill is the celebrated author of Female Fortune: the Anne Lister diaries 1833-36. This was the book that inspired TV scriptwriter Sally Wainwright to write Gentleman Jack (BBC1/HBO). It was also the book Sally chose to take with her if she was ever trapped on a desert island (BBC R4).
We are holding this fund-raising talk in conjunction with Jill, a member of Halifax Civic Trust, and afterwards there will be a book signing of Female Fortune.
The event will be held at The Albany Club at Hope Hall 57 Clare Rd, Halifax HX1 2JP which has connections to Anne Lister by being home to Christopher Rawson her coal rival.
The event starts at 14.00 with a 40 minute talk followed by Q&A. There are refreshments of Tea & Coffee and biscuits.
This is a Fund raising event and Tickets are now on sale at £15.00 with the proceeds going towards Halifax Civic Trust.
This event is open to everyone, including members of Halifax Civic Trust.

Halifax Civic Trust 60th Invites you to their 60 years Anniversary Lunch 5th November
Halifax Civic Trust Celebrates 60 Years of working for Halifax.
We are pleased to invite you to our Celebratory Lunch in La Vedetta, the private
terrace-room at Pollino’s restaurant, Warley Road, Halifax with the mayor, Angie
Gallagher and her Consort. David Cant, former chair of the Yorkshire vernacular
buildings study group will give an illustrated talk after lunch.
We will begin at 12.30 for a 1pm start on Saturday 5 November.
Our guest speaker, David Cant, well-known local historian and authority on the
traditional buildings of our area, will give an illustrated talk after we have eaten. It
promises to be an interesting afternoon with good food and good company.
David’s talk has the title:
HALIFAX BUILDINGS AND HISTORY
and will last between 30 and 40 minutes.
Pollino’s have put together a menu for the fixed price of £25, as follows:
Garlic Bread and water will be on the table, and tea and filter coffee will be served at the end of the meal. These items are included in the price of £25. Drinks (wine etc.) will be available for purchase at the integral bar.

Heritage Walks by Halifax Civic Trust with David Glover
Please find information on two Calderdale based heritage walks run by Halifax Civic Trust.
Local historian David Glover will be your guide as you walk through areas of Calderdale, learning the history and some not so widely known facts about the past of Halifax.
Both events are free of charge but booking is essential.

An exhilarating, challenging linear walk from Badger Lane along the eastern medieval route into Halifax, including fine views of the Shibden Valley, panoramic town views from Beacon Hill, and locations of Anne Lister interest. This is part of our Summer Season of Tours.
Rough paths and steep slopes in places – tough footwear recommended.

This is a Two Hour circular Town Centre walk looking at military connections , royal visits, facts & anecdotes about old buildings and projects which have won accolades. The walk is hosted by David Glover Halifax Civic Trust’s Vice Chair. The Tour is part of our Summer Season of Walks.
Halifax Civic Trust Celebrates National Civic Day (June 18th)
Halifax Civic Trust celebrated National Civic Day on 18th June with a stall at Woolshops and events in the town.
Civic Day is promoted Nationally by Civic Voice who want to see a society where every individual can say ‘I am proud of where I live’.
Halifax Civic Trust has been working to protect Halifax’s Heritage for 60 Years.
It was an exciting day with a 2-hour heritage walk around the town and a special showing of films about Halifax and the Civic Trusts own film about the Wakefield Gate or Magna Via. There were local competitions, and the Trust shared its work over the last 60 years. People were invited to join as members and support their work locally.
The Town Crier announced the event across the Town and the Mayor Cllr. Angie Gallagher opened Civic Day in Halifax and spoke to members of the public about the work of Halifax Civic Trust.

Civic Day – Woolshops Saturday June 18th!
Halifax Civic Trust are inviting you to celebrate Civic Day in Halifax.
Saturday 18th June from 9.30 am – 430pm
Our stall will be located at the walkway outside the Woolshops shopping centre (outside Marks and Spencer in town)
It will be an exciting day with a 2 hour heritage walk around the town and a special showing of films about Halifax and our own film about a part of Halifax you may not
know.
All our events are free; we just ask for a donation to support our work.
