Lead the Way, has released the Lead the Way Newsletter June 2019 with news about the Special Olympics taster day at North Bridge Leisure Centre that was held with the support of West Yorkshire Support and Calderdale Council.

There will also be a Carers’ Week Event on Tuesday 11 June, 1:00pm-3:30pm at Queens Road Neighbourhood Centre, Halifax HX1 4NE. There will be tea and cake and information stalls.

There is also a reminder of the Living Well Roadshow on Wednesday 26 June, 10:30am-2:30pm at the Threeways Centre, Nursery Lane, Halifax, HX3 5SX which will be looking at how people with a learning disability or autism can live well, and also sharing information about annual health checks and screening. This will give local people a chance to talk about what is working well in their area, and what isn’t working so well.

There are also some volunteering opportunities available at present.

Art Group Volunteer – to offer support at the weekly art group to adults attending the session.

Cook Together Share Together to be matched up with an adult in your area who has a learning disability and lives independently. You will prepare and cook a meal together and eat the meal together, sharing new skills with each other, which may lead to new friendships.

Living Well Roadshow

The Living Well Project will be holding a number of roadshows which will be looking at how people with a learning disability or autism can live well, and also sharing information about annual health checks and screening. One of the roadshows will be on Wednesday 26 June, 10:30am-2:30pm at Threeways Centre, Nursery Lane, Halifax, HX3 5SX. This will give local people a chance to talk about what is working well in their area, and what isn’t working so well.

They would love to hear from:

  • People with lived experience
  • Families and carers
  • Support providers
  • Commissioners
  • Social Workers
  • Community Learning Disability teams
  • Advocacy providers
  • Screening professionals from the NHS

Special Olympics Coming to Calderdale

Go along to a Special Olympics Taster Session on Sunday 7 April, 1:30pm-3:30pm at North Bridge Leisure Centre HX3 6TE where you can have a go at a number of Special Olympic sports, receive free goodies, meet local clubs and coaches and find out more about how YOU can get involved in the Special Olympics in Calderdale! Open to anyone aged 12 and over with a learning disability in Calderdale, their family, friends and supporters.

Computer Workshops with Lead the Way and Calderdale Libraries

Lead the Way, in partnership with Calderdale Libraries, will be holding a FREE computer workshop on Thursday 19 July, 2:00-4:00pm at
Todmorden Library.

The workshop is for adults who have a learning disability, and their families and carers. People can come and go as they please, they do not need to stay for the whole session.

It will be a chance for people to have support with things like learning about Facebook, how to send an e-mail, how to keep safe on-line, how to look for things on the internet (surfing),how to fill in forms, how to look at videos and music….and lots more things. We will be holding the workshops across lots of different libraries around Calderdale so keep watching for dates and venues for a workshop near you!

Young Leaders Course With Lead the Way

Lead the Way currently has spaces on the Young Leaders Course July/August for people aged 16/17 yrs who have a learning disability, autism or both.

This is a  great opportunity to be involved and find out about what is happening in Calderdale.

What does the group do?

The group meets once a week, on a Thursday, 10am-12pm at Lower Valley Day Services, Rastrick.
The group is open to all abilities and is fully accessible.
The group create various artwork during the sessions and then take it home.

What is the role?

As a volunteer you will support people attending the group with whatever artwork they are making at the session, along with the day to day running of the group.

What kind of volunteer are they looking for?

  • Someone who is friendly
  • Someone who is patient
  • Someone who enjoys working with a group of people
  • Someone who has a general interest in making things/art
  • Someone who is confident working with people who have varying abilities and needs.  All people attending, who have additional needs, come with their own support staff.
  • Someone who likes to have fun!

How will you be supported?

You will be supported at the group by a member of staff from Lead the Way.
Support such as supervision will be carried out by the line manager.

Expenses

All your travel expenses to and from the group will be covered by Lead the Way on production of a receipt, bus ticket etc.

How do you become a volunteer?

Exciting new group for adults with a learning disability

Lead The Way are starting an exciting new group for adults with a learning disability and working with Hoot Creative Arts to provide 10 sessions allowing people to explore their creative side, meet new friends and have fun.

Starting on Thursday 1 October 2015 – From 10am to 12noon
