FREE Batwatch Event for all the family

Batwatch Event LogoJoin Calderdale Countryside Officer, Chris Sutcliffe, on a search for bats in the lovely, old St. Matthew’s churchyard to find out more about the life of bats and listen for them using bat detectors.

Tuesday 24 May – 9pm
Meet at the tower opposite the Sun Inn, Lightcliffe

This event is FREE and all ages welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult and warm clothing is advised.

Have a Jungle Adventure at Eureka this Easter

Take an expedition into the Eureka! Jungle and take part in interactive story sessions, dress up as your favourite wild animals and have a go at creating your own jungle soundtrack and more.

Saturday 19 March to Sunday 17 April
At Eureka, Discovery Rd, Halifax HX1 2NE

There will also be opportunities on selected days to meet jungle critters and test your nerve with some truly creepy crawlies.

Jungle Adventure activities are FREE with standard admission or a valid Eureka! Annual Pass.

Meet the birds and grab a photo at Cromwell Bottom – FREE events

Cromwell bottom logoLook at winter birds or practice your photography skills with the following events taking place at Cromwell Bottom this month. Both events are FREE although donations can be made if you wish and you can call in for half an hour or spend the whole morning and enjoy a warm drink in the cabin.

Meet the birds – Saturday 16 January – from 9.30am
A chance to have a relaxed look at winter birds in the reserve with volunteers to guide you and give helpful hints and tips.

Get that photo – Saturday 30 January – from 9.30am
A morning of advice and practice for everyone, from smartphone users to long lens experts, kids to grandparents. Learn how to set up a good place to get your photos, and get advice [if you want it] on useful features on your camera.

Cromwell Bottom Needs Your Help This Weekend!

Some major work needs to be done at Cromwell Bottom  in the reed beds to clear water channels and keep the area healthy for all the creatures that live there and help is required to get the job done.

Saturday 14 November – At 9.15 – 9.30am for a safety talk
Meeting in the Compound area at the Soon to be Visitor Centre

Wellingtons or Waders will be best for splashing about in the reeds, but Boots will be fine for some of the bag dragging outside the reed bed and please take a Packed Lunch & Flask as well as warm Waterproof clothing.

Go Bat Spotting with Batman and Hugh

Meet at Park Wood Crematorium, Elland for a stroll looking for bats in the local area as they prepare themselves for hibernation.

Wednesday 16 September at 7.30pm

  • Easy walk on level paths
  • Particularly suitable for families (strictly no unaccompanied children)
  • Sorry no dogs with the exception of guide or hearing dogs
  • Walk – please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

Insect repellent, warm clothing and a torch recommended and parking available in the crematorium grounds.
