Park Tennis Club

Park Tennis Club, the little club with the big heart

Posted on Updated on

Join me and other members of the Park Tennis Club and be served with a magnificent experience!

Tucked away, surrounded by hedges at the end of a cul-de-sac, is a deceptively small tennis club with far and wide national and international acclaim. Park Tennis offers a very welcome retreat into a space that is both relaxing and teeming with exciting possibilities, right at our doorstep.

Then and Now

Park tennis is not a new kid on the block.

The club boasts a long, continuous history. It was founded in the 1920s by Church members when tennis was promoted as a means of getting people outdoors for exercise.

A bit of local History

As Park Tennis has been running for over a century, a stash of lovingly kept memorabilia of receipts for work carried out on the grounds, club correspondence, not forgetting the many regional successes, the club provides a unique biopic to the history of Halifax!

Games were historically played on grass and tarmac courts. Presently the club boasts two well-maintained clay courts with open space for spectator viewing, a bonfire patch and a vegetable garden run by members for its members. The spacious grounds are lovingly tended by volunteers and include a club room for members to enjoy a cuppa and catch up after their session.

Park Tennis Club is equipped for a wide range of events including coaching, league matches and organised social sessions.  The club caters for all ages, groups and abilities and is open to anyone willing to try and discover how tennis can lift your mood as well as your heart rate.  Members have the opportunity to play tennis as recreation, competitively, or socially, at their own pace.

Day to day

Due to the nature of the clay surface, the club usually closes during the winter, once the weather becomes too damp and frost appears. However, so that they can still enjoy the game and companionship the club has provided for them, members continue to play by booking indoor sessions at other local tennis clubs.

The club and its grounds rely on volunteers for tending, resurfacing the courts, managing the vegetable patch and other small tasks. Parts of the hedges around the space are trimmed by the neighbouring property owners, which in itself is a testament to the club for having good neighbourhood relationships.

The club sign at the front is courtesy of the Phoenix Shed, made with reclaimed material, some of which was found in the grounds.

A taster session

A visit to the club wouldn’t have been complete without picking up a racket. My host, a member of the club ushered me onto the court and made me feel at ease from the very first exchange. It takes coordination, literally thinking on your feet and a lot of stamina. It is also very easy to get into and is a greatly entertaining form of exercise that can give a good heart rate, great aerobic and overall workout, while spending time outdoors.

By the end, I succeeded in 22 exchanges and not a ball lost. I’m personally chuffed with the result!

Trophies and Testimonials

Apart from exercise, recreation and socialising, Park Tennis has helped many young people with their pathway to education.  Two members gained tennis scholarships with universities in the United States and came back with degrees and great memories.  Several of their youngsters have also gained Level 1 Tennis Assistant awards and several more have completed their Leadership Experience for the Duke Of Edinburgh and Sports Leaders Awards.

Summer Camps

Summer Camps for 2021 proved popular with 115 children aged 6-11 years attending the courses run over 2 sessions. 10 children aged 4-7 booked on to the one-day summer camp course.

See What’s Happening at the Refurbished Courts at Park Tennis Club

Posted on Updated on

The tennis season has officially started at Park Tennis Club, Brighouse after the opening of their newly refurbished courts.  Members, prospective members and visitors were welcomed to the club with refreshments provided throughout the day.

The new ‘no nails’ lines were proclaimed by all to be a fantastic investment, looking smart, feeling level under foot, and providing a consistent bounce when the ball strikes them; all a major improvement on the old plastic tapes. General opinion was that the Italian clay courts, which had over a ton of new clay laid on them in the pre-season, will improve when they have been ‘played-in’ to help bed them down.

Pictured are some of the members who put in hours of work to implement these improvements.  They are celebrating the work being over!

The event also saw the members’ Wimbledon Ballot take place, where 3 lucky members won the chance to buy tickets for the show courts at the Wimbledon Championships in July.  With the Public Ballot vastly over-subscribed, joining an affiliated club is a great way of increasing your chances of buying a pair of these much sought after tickets.

The club is now open for play, and anyone who is interested in membership is invited to get in touch; eMail infoparktennisclub@gmail.com or visit the Park Tennis Club website for further information.

Opening of Refurbished Courts at Park Tennis Club

Posted on Updated on

Despite the cool weather, the tennis season is close upon us! Park Tennis Club, Bute Avenue, Brighouse HD6 2JA have been gearing up over the last month and will be officially opening their newly refurbished courts on Sunday 14 April, 10:00am-3:00pm.

New and existing members are expected to dust off their rackets and try out the Italian clay court surface, now sporting new ‘no nail’ lines. The two court club on Bute Avenue is thought to be the first tennis club in West Yorkshire to install this technology, widely used on the high profile championship courts in Europe.

The Open Day will take place from 10:00am-3:00pm with a variety of on-court activities, which visitors are welcome to join in with. Absolutely anyone is welcome, there are rackets available to borrow and light refreshments will be served.

Like many smaller sports clubs, Park Tennis Club depends on a band of willing volunteers. This spring, members have carried out major maintenance work on the courts, laying over a tonne of clay dressing, relocating the net posts, as well as installing new lines. Fencing and fence posts have been repaired, the exterior of the quaint wooden pavilion, the storage shed, and the shed housing last year’s major development (an automated watering system) have been painted.

All this ensures pleasant, modern and well maintained surroundings, and after all their hard work, members are looking forward to a successful season.
