10 Years of O’Hooley & Tidow  – Brighouse Arts Festival 2020

Posted on Updated on

Much loved Yorkshire folk duo Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow have suddenly been propelled into newfound fame for penning the theme tune for Sally Wainwright’s hit BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, earning them global admiration, appearances on TV, and Radio 4 Woman’s Hour.

Matthew Harrison-Lord, Brighouse Arts Festival Director, said “I cannot believe we have managed to book O’Hooley & Tidow for their 10 year celebration concert as they gain international fame from the Gentleman Jack series. Once again, we have managed to bring huge acts to Brighouse – a town that normally gets forgotten about when it comes to the big artists and acts”

Belinda and Heidi’s boundless songwriting has been described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional’ and The Independent as ‘defiant, robust, northern, poetical, political folk music for the times we live in.’ From an emotionally charged song about an elephant orphanage in Nairobi, to a joyous celebration of the Leeds cycling champion Beryl Burton, they explore, consider and connect subjects and stories in a distinctive, inventive and memorable way.

John Buxton, Arts for Brighouse Charity Trustee, said “We know and love their work as local Calderdale artists, it’s great to see them catapult into fame because of Anne Lister and Shibden Hall’s history. Brighouse’s direct connection is that Anne Walker is buried at Lightcliffe, part of Brighouse and Lower Calderdale”

Having the originality and skill to invite comparison with the most celebrated harmony duos, from early Simon and Garfunkel to the iconic Kate and Anna McGarrigle, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson says ‘They sing together in the way families do. Normally, you only get that closeness in the voices with family bands like TheCoppers or The Watersons.’

10 Years of O’Hooley & Tidow, Friday 2nd October 2020, 7:30pm, St Martins Parish Church, Brighouse, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. £20.

RSPCA Big Walkies at Shibden Park

Posted on Updated on

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch are hosting their third Big Walkies – a sponsored dog walk for both 2 legged and 4 legged supporters to help raise funds for their local RSPCA Centre.

The 3k walk will take place in the beautiful grounds of Shibden Park, Halifax on Sunday 24 September at 11am. All sponsorship raised will go towards providing care, training and rehabilitation to the current – and future – animals looking for their forever homes in Calderdale and Kirklees.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome and there’s even more to experience on the day with fun stalls and games for the whole family and their pooches to enjoy.

This year Fay Gibbons (RSPCA Events Coordinator) will be taking on the role of lead walker along with one of the centre’s lucky pooches! Fay said “I can’t wait for the return of the Big Walkies to Shibden Park this year. We always have such fun with the local community and it’s an event that really helps us raise awareness of the amazing animal welfare work our branch does and gives us the opportunity to raise vital funds to support this work too.”

It really is a beautiful, scenic walk and it’s great to see so many excited pooches flock to Shibden Park for the best walk ever! I couldn’t help but get involved with the walk myself and I hope this will give us the opportunity to show off some of our current doggy residents looking for their forever homes. We hope to see lots of people and pooches there but if you can’t make it and still want to support us, you can donate through our justgiving page too.”

To register please visit www.rspca-halifaxandhuddersfield.org.uk It’s only £5 and once you’ve signed up, you will receive a Big Walkies Participant Pack and Big Walkies wristband. All sponsorship raised will go directly to the local RSPCA Halifax and Huddersfield Centre, which is a self funded branch of the National RSPCA responsible for raising their own funds within the local area.
