An update from Elland & District Food Bank and Support Drop-In

Posted on

When we opened our doors in October 2015 we helped just one family in that first session. Now, one year later, we have 86 people registered with us and give food bags to 25 people on average every Saturday morning!

The Food Bank is open every Saturday morning at the Southgate Centre, Langdale Street in Elland from 10.15 a.m. until 11.45 a.m.  As well as a bag of food, customers are also offered a warm welcome, refreshments, and a friendly chat.

Any person wishing to access the food bank just needs to come along and register. They will be asked in confidence to explain their circumstances and we will do our very best to help them. We offer help to any family or single person living in Elland and district.

We are so indebted to the management and customers of Morrisons in Elland. Every Saturday morning we collect several trays of bread and produce from the store. Morrisons  donates all this food, which would otherwise have to go to waste. They also allow us to have a trolley in the store which customers fill every week, putting in a tin or two as they leave the store. We also receive many food donations from faith groups, local community groups, local businesses and individuals.

Financial donations are also important to us as they help with the running costs of the project such as building rent, insurance, packaging materials etc. The Food Bank is run entirely by volunteers and is funded solely by grant money or donations.

To make a food or financial donation, or to find out more about becoming a volunteer, contact Ann Mansfield (Secretary) on 01422 364620, or email to ellandfoodbank@gmail.com
