Further information including agenda for the day and highlights
Join us at The Gaygill Rooms at The Piece Hall
Friday 3rd March 2023
9.30 am – 14.30 pm
Drawing on the life experiences of women from communities across Calderdale, special guests include Holly Lynch MP & Alison Lowe OBE West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor.
Crucially, we want to look at what we can do together to address some of the key factors that impact on health, opportunity, aspiration and social justice. The event will draw on the life experiences of women from diverse communities across Calderdale, using their voices to raise awareness of keys issues, and importantly, discuss ways in which lived experience can be used to inform and help shape policy and decision making at a local regional and national level.
We want to make sure that the voices of women and girls are included in regional and national discussions around health, poverty and social cohesion. We want to make our communities stronger. And by creating this safe space for visitors to learn and connect around tough local issues, we aim to provide a unique opportunities for people to get involved in helping to shape and influence change.
This event has been made possible thanks to support from West Yorkshire Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund, The National Lottery Community Fund and the Community Foundation for Calderdale.

HALIFAX STARS – A celebration of the proud tradition of boxing clubs in Calderdale
“Boxing is the sport to which all other sports aspire …”
Big George, Halifax Star Boxing Club
[ Excerpt – Read full article ]
verd de gris arts have been awarded funding through Historic England’s Everyday Heritage Grants – to create an innovative intergenerational project with the aim of celebrating the working class culture of boxing clubs around Halifax, West Yorkshire.
Halifax Stars will record the stories of older fighters, and the gyms that used to be a prominent feature of the area – as well as celebrating the importance of boxing coaching with young working class people today – the instilling of self-discipline and self-care, respect and pride in community.
The project will be cross cultural, reflecting the communal nature of boxing culture here in Halifax, but will, importantly, share this culture with a wider audience – to increase understanding of boxing’s remarkable working class legacy in the area, and champion the work that is done through the clubs to help some of the poorest and most marginalised young people in our communities.

Verd De Gris present the Calderdale Community Cookbook
We have just finished a community cookbook, celebrating local food culture across the borough.
All of the recipes come from local people, from Park, Elland, Todmorden, Brighouse, Ovenden and Mixenden.
We also celebrate the local shopkeepers + market traders who sell fresh fruit + veg in Calderdale and remain a part of local communities – butchers, bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers. This includes celebrating the wonderful international food stores along Queens Rd …
We also touch on the often difficult relationship some local people have with food / diet etc.
You can view the cookbook here :

Dementia Awareness Week – Soul Journey with Verd de gris
To coincide with Dementia Awareness Week verd de gris in conjunction with Calderdale Libraries will be screening their beautiful film ‘Soul Journey’ at venues across the borough all week, including Halifax Central, King Cross, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden Libraries.
The film explores some of the myths that build up around dementia and weaves together spoken word, moving images and an original score to capture some of the beauty and dignity of the people taking part – and to celebrate the extraordinary richness of the landscape that means so much to them.
If you want to take part in the creative sessions contact jeff.vdg@btinternet.com for more information.
